Most social media metrics are noise unless they connect directly to attention → intent → action → revenue or retention. The “likes and followers” layer is mostly vanity unless you know how it translates downstream.
Here are the metrics that actually matter, grouped by what they tell you:
1) Attention (Are people actually seeing it?)
These tell you if the algorithm is distributing your content.
- Reach → unique people who saw your content
- Impressions → total views (helps detect repeat exposure)
- View rate / hook rate (first 3 seconds for video) → whether you stop the scroll
- Watch time / average view duration → strongest signal for video distribution
👉 Why it matters: If attention is weak, nothing else can scale.
2) Engagement quality (Not just “likes”)
This is where most people get misled.
-
Engagement rate (by reach, not followers)
→ (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach - Shares → strongest “this is valuable” signal
- Saves / bookmarks → high intent (evergreen value)
- Comments (quality > quantity) → depth of interest
👉 Key insight:
A post with fewer likes but high saves/shares usually outperforms long-term.
3) Traffic & intent (Are people leaving the platform?)
This is where business value starts.
- CTR (Click-through rate) → how many go to your link/profile
- Profile visits → interest spike indicator
- Link clicks → direct intent
- Swipe-up / tap-through rate (stories/reels ads)
👉 If engagement is high but CTR is low, your content entertains but doesn’t convert.
4) Conversion metrics (Do they actually do business with you?)
This is where social becomes revenue.
- Conversion rate (CVR) → clicks → purchase/signup
- Cost per acquisition (CPA / CAC)
- Revenue per post / campaign
- Lead quality (not just lead volume)
👉 This is the real “does it matter?” layer.
5) Retention & audience value (long-term success)
Often ignored, but critical.
- Follower growth rate (not total followers)
- Unfollow rate → content mismatch signal
- Returning viewers / repeat engagement
- Email signups or owned-audience growth from social
👉 Followers only matter if they keep engaging.
6) Algorithm health signals (platform-specific but powerful)
These influence reach indirectly.
- Engagement velocity (first 30–60 minutes performance)
- Completion rate (for video)
- Rewatch rate
- Negative feedback (hides, “not interested”)
The simple truth most people miss
If you reduce everything:
Great social content = High retention + high share/save rate + strong conversion intent
Everything else is secondary.
A practical “no-BS” dashboard
If you only tracked 6 things:
- Reach
- Watch time / retention
- Engagement rate (by reach)
- Shares + saves
- CTR
- Conversion rate (or lead/subscription rate)
That’s enough to run a serious growth strategy.
